Building control

Options
I wonder if anyone can help me. I recently put an application in to remove a couple of walls within my house. I have pit up two steels in place as per the instructions of the Structural engineer.. The chap from building control is now telling me what doors I must fit ! Can he do this or is he going beyond his requirements... surely the job was the steels, and to confirm they are correctly fitted and he should then sign me off...
i would be interested in people’s views

Why haven't you rung the SE and asked them? After all, they've seen your property and have the qualifications to advise, while people you meet here will be just random bods on the internet, like me.
My view is that the BCO should have given you a reason why certain doors should be fitted. Then you might have given us a hint as to what it was.

Did you want to say what size you were having and what size BC have said?

Is he telling you to fit something wider than you were going to?

If so, it could be due to making sure they will be suitable for wheelchair users.

Are they external glazed doors? They will AFAIK need to meet certain standards, he shouldn't be picking your doors for you but its quite right of him (and in your interest) to point out if doors you intend to use are not up to standard.

There has to be a logical reason why the BCO has picked up on doors if he was only meant to there to inspect and sign off the steels!?! Has the removal of the walls reduced any fire separation/escape from bedrooms in the upper floors?

I don't think you get to decide what Building Control will inspect.
Presumably, the doors you intended to fit don't meet building regs, either for safety (wrong glass in a door with glass), or not fire rated if it's a building that needs them.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Ah, I get it now. The steels are entirely unrelated to this door issue, so the SE's opinion is irrelevant.
What you're asking is whether the BCO has the right to look at other aspects of the build, besides the one he came to inspect. The answer is 'Yes, of course.'
