Tracking down my refund

I purchased some items from Amazon back in January and one of those items became defective a couple of weeks ago. I have had no problem at all getting a refund from Amazon but almost two weeks after they confirmed they had made the refund I had not received the money in my account. Then I realised that they understandably made the refund back to the original payment method. I didn't recognise this payment method and then it dawned on me that I think this was actually a giftcard I received from a family member for Christmas that I used. It was one of those pre-paid debit cards by Mastercard. I bought a few things and then disposed of the card.
If I had noticed and taken more care I would have seen this when requesting a refund and I could have had an amazon credit. I'm not at all pointing fingers here - this is on me but I'd like to get that money back.
I only have the last 4 digits of the card from my Amazon account and they are understandably unwilling to share the 16 digit number for security purposes. I've contacted Mastercard and they need the 16 digit number in order to help so I'm a bit stuck.
Does anybody have any thoughts on this? Do I just need to chalk this one up to experience?

Ask the family member that gave you it. They might have the details.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately they only recall that they purchased it from a supermarket. They can't recall which it was as it was back in October.0

Ask the family member to send you the money over by bank transfer? (After all, they've had it credited back to their account, haven't they?)2

No they purchased a pre paid credit card that's where the money has been returned to.DoaM said:Ask the family member to send you the money over by bank transfer? (After all, they've had it credited back to their account, haven't they?)
Op as far as I know unless you registered the prepayment card then it's untraceable0 -
I would suggest contacting Amazon again and asking them why they can't provide you with the full 16 digit number. After all, provided that they are giving the details to the person who made the original purchase, they wouldn't be breaking any data protection laws or requirements.jgallcash said:I only have the last 4 digits of the card from my Amazon account and they are understandably unwilling to share the 16 digit number for security purposes.0 -
As the prepaid card is still registered against your Amazon account then buy something from Amazon and use that card for the payment.jgallcash said:I only have the last 4 digits of the card from my Amazon account and they are understandably unwilling to share the 16 digit number for security purposes.1 -
That would only work if the OP opted to save the card when making the original transaction, something that they may not have done if they had used the total balance available.LilElvis said:As the prepaid card is still registered against your Amazon account then buy something from Amazon and use that card for the payment.0 -
Best bet with any prepayment card such as this is not to buy goods. Buy a gift card and load that onto your account.
That way any refunds go to the gift card that is linked to your account.

So it sounds like the card is still registered against the Amazon account for him to have those 4 digits. Hopefully he OP will be back at some point to confirm if this is the case.jgallcash said:I only have the last 4 digits of the card from my Amazon account2 -
Thanks so much to those of you with the logical sense. Indeed the card was still registered as a payment option on my account and so I was able to buy something else without having to provide any other information to Amazon. £50 didn't have to be written off like I thought
Thank you1
