Noone can steal anything from you with your account number and sort code. They can only deposit money into your account.
I think Jeremy Clarkson would disagree with you there !
He published his bank details in his 'paper column giving the same argument.
A well known charity helped themselves to a small donation.
I believe he allowed them to keep 'donation' but point was proved.
If you believe the story at all, 'Helped themselves' is not accurate. Reportedly an unauthorised Direct Debit was set up by a third party TO the charity.
And Clarkson could have had it immediately refunded using the DD guarantee.

  • As has been discussed on here many times, you give your account number and sort code to a stranger every time you write a cheque. If it's a reputable organisation, name it, unless you think you shouldn't be telling a bunch of strangers.
A cheque????   Is this 1970?   I don't give anyone cheques.
They took entry fee by debit card.   Why can't they refund money the exact same way?   Surely this is the safest way?
If I bet with an online bookmaker and deposit funds by debit card, I can withdraw my winnings the same route.

Everyone has stated there is absolutely no risk to you giving them your sort code and account number.
  • If you wanted someone to post you something would you give them your address?
I'd give them my address.  I wouldn't give them the door key and say "let yourself in".     They took my entry fee by Debit Card.   Surely they can't return winnings the same way?  Why do they want personal information?

Ask Jeremy Clarkson about that!   He was scammed by someone setting up a fake DD to steal his money!

Good grief. The Clarkson story has been covered countless times, incl in this very thread. Nobody stole any money from him. It is impossible to steal money by DD.

It doesn't appear that you are interested in actually getting your winnings.

The Jeremy Clarkson episode says you're wrong there!   There's always risk giving personal info to strangers.
But my question is, since they took my entry fee by Debit Card, why are they being so awkward about returning my winnings in the same way?   Surely this is the common-sense safest, quickest and easiest way?
Why are they trying to obtain my current account details?
Am I missing something?  Is there some reason why they can't return money via my debit card in the same way that Amazon, Ebay or an online bookmaker would?

They want to phone because they are hoping you will give them some of those winnings as a further donation to the charity, maybe set up a standing order for a monthly contribution, maybe a standing order to buy further lottery tickets.

You were happy to give out your card number, expiry date and your CVV to a third party. You didn't apparently worry that the third party would fleece you of more money, which they could easily have done with the information you had provided them with.

You are now unhappy to give your sort code and account number to the same third party, because you think they could use it to scam you out of money, which they couldn't.

There seems to be a problem in your logic.

Get a grip, give them your details and spend your winnings on tin foil to make hats for you and your family.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.
