USA Summer Camp Work

I am student, and through the university I attend, at a careers fair, I applied to be working this summer at a summer camp in America. I was accepted and asked to pay fees which included my flight, insurance, interviews, etc. This has been cancelled and they have said that they will be looking for a different camp for us to work at but the embassy is still closed for us to get VISAs and will be for the foreseeable future due to the Corona Virus. They have also offered to defer us until next year. Not knowing my legal standing, I have not yet replied to this email, but my friend who is in the same situation with the same company did respond, and they said they will not be able to carry out refunds due to them already spending on different fees. Before I reply, I would like to know what my legal position is. I would like my money back as I am unsure if I can go next year as it will be my last year at university and would like to have it as an option not an obligation. I am confused as well because part of the money I spent to join included the flights so they should be getting a refund for these.
