How to stop AVG taking money from Nationwide account

If this is a continuous payment authorisation using the Debit Card number. Nationwide can stop further payments, in a similar way as cancelling a Direct Debit. Nationwide would need to contact Visa and instruct them to stop the continuous payment. I managed to get Lloyd's Bank to stop one in the past. Canceling the debit card and reporting it lost may help as this would have a new card number and security numbers so payments may not be taken using the old numbers. Cant guarantee this would work but might be worth a try.

They can (and must, if requested) prevent further payments, but as discussed further upthread, it's not really the same as doing so with DDs, especially with the greater protection afforded by the DD guarantee.

No, that's not how it works, Visa play no part in it.  However, the customer doesn't need to know the internal nuts and bolts of the process, they just need to know that the bank is responsible for dealing with it.

No, that wouldn't work, the authority applies to the account not the card, even though it may be set up initially by specifying the card number.  There have been numerous threads started by posters believing that changing cards would negate the CPA but finding out the hard way that it doesn't, so instructing the bank to do this remains the supported method, preferably accompanied by cancelling the contract with the payee too so as to tidy up any residual issues with continuing to owe the money.

CPA's are a agreement between "The Company" & "The Customer"
Unlike a DD on which the bank hold a mandate.
It is not possible to generate a list of these, as per above NO MANDATE, so the bank has not part or knowledge of these.

As you seem to work in this area perhaps you can answer this. When one of these payments is requested from an account, I presume you can tell it's on behalf of a CPA as opposed to a normal DD/FP/Cheque?
    Only by experience.
They use your 16 digit debit card number, just the same as any other card payment.
So on a statement it would simply show as VIS usually (if you have a Visa debit card)

Nationwide will have access to a Visa system that allows you to pick up the retailer and place a stop on further payments. Retailers get a message saying it has been cancelled. I have seen them ignore them, but that then costs them money when it is claimed back.
One of the biggest issues is some companies have more than one description on the visa system. A good example is WHICH the consumer group who hate CPA's yet use them. And make it impossible to pick which one you need.

Problem is the OP or partner has no account details, email address isn't recognised.

As a Nationwide member, I am disappointed by the OP's experience.  The informative responses above show what to do. Here is a practical example of what could/should happen.

My wife had a similar renewal demand from AVG.  She is an authorised user on my Creation credit card.  I disputed the transaction with Creation.  They immediately froze it, recrediting the amount to my account pending the result of their investigation.  They cancelled and reissued my wife's card.

Of course, AVG tried to justify their charge.  They did this by supplying Creation with copies of e-mails, T+Cs, etc.  Creation sent me copies and asked for my comments.  Briefly, my wife 'enjoyed' a free trial, which could be renewed after a period for a fee.  The first  renewal went through OK.  A year later, they tried again, at something like a 75% increase!  This was hidden in their message by a reference to the 'current rate' rather than an amount.  They would renew automatically 15 days ahead of the renewal date.  Aha!  Spot the inconsistency?

Anyway, we feel Creation protected us and are very grateful for their help.  And of course we will never use AVG again.

That is the way doggy organisations such as casinos, !!!!!! site works. It takes numerous effort to cancel them. People should not spend a lt of their valuable times to fight this dodgy companies.

Next time if you deal with this sort of organisation,  is by paying, giving information using  prepaid card. You only feed the card when you know there is payment due shortly.

When you 1st get the free, it asks if you would like to try the paid for version. Then keeps nagging. Some people fall for it on the basis that they think they HAVE TO PAY to keep using it. As they do not read it properly.
