Switching with 'dumb' smart meters to a new 'smart meter' tariff

I have had smart meters installed by Shell, but can now switch to a better tariff. Current best tariff with Eon but on condition of smart meters being installed. Our smart meters do not work correctly now (still have to send in Gas reading), let alone when we switch to another supplier.
My question is can I apply for the 'smart meter' Eon tariff as I have smart meters even if they are already or will become dumb? Will they be happy for me to send in readings from my 'smart' (dumb) meters until this promised software upgrade whenever that is, whilst giving me the cheaper tariff? Or will they demand to come and fit new meters that work? Hoping to avoid this as the previous fitting was such a palaver. Any experience of this anyone?

Should be able to sign up for the EON tariff. At some future date ,EON should be able to use the meters but in the meantime ,you will have to submit manual readings . I suspect that all the suppliers have a huge backlog of fitting appointments to fulfil ,so I think its extremely unlikely that EON will be chasing you to change the meters (if necessary) anytime soon.
