Urgent Recalling a payment sent to an account that's overdrawn

Hello,
I made a stupid mistake this morning. Instead of transferring money in between my current account and joint account. I transferred it to an old overdrawn current account. Its only a small amount of £70 but im super poor at the moment, I won't give a sob story because I've already cried a river over this. I'm 40 weeks pregnant and about to pop so could really do with sorting this. It was my last bit of money I had until payday at the end of the month, so I now have nothing and a 29 year old and 6 year old left to feed (plus me and the bump)

I've contacted both banks explaining my mistake. Starling say I've to contact barclays, barclays say ive got to contact starling. No one seems to want to help give me my money back.

My barclays was in an unarranged overdraft of £100 so the £70 I transferred naturally got eaten by that and I'm unable to transfer it back. Please can anyone help advise? Am I totally screwed or is there a way I can get barclays to transfer the money back to my starling account. Any help or advice I'll be eternally greatful.

Thanks from a very pregnant and stressed mama 😭

Im sure someone more experience then I will be along shortly. Sorry to hear of your predicament. Why does Barclays ask you to contact Starling, surely they are the only ones who can help in that scenario?

I think that you’ll struggle here, as it’s not really your money once it’s gone back to barclays, it’s there money that you spent previously.
You can write, and explain your issue, and they may show you some goodwill, but keep it polite, as they are under no obligation to do so.
If they do make your overdraft authorised, how long before you would be able to pay the full £100 back?

Have you abandoned the old Barclays account or were you using it or more specifically paying money into it?
If it was left dormant then your chances of getting Barclays to refund you are slim.
The reason Barclays are telling you need to contact Starling is that there is an inter bank procedure for unwinding wrongly made transactions. You claim to Starling asking them to contact Barclays for a refund.
They will have up to 20 days to respond.

How much were you paying to Barclays a month to service this overdraft anyway?

Sorry that you find yourself in this situation, but I think you will struggle with this one. If you're not currently using the account as your main account they will be unlikely to return the money to you especially if you are in an unauthorised position. Essentially you've moved your custom to another bank, whilst still owing them money that they technically never agreed to lend you. Also the fact you've got no monthly transactions going through the account doesn't help, they will be less likely to lend as it is seen as a significant risk to them.

Barclays would not be able to help you unless they agree to offer an authorised overdraft facility, which would  be unlikely if you don’t use them as your main banking facility and you have just left your account in an unauthorised overdraft position.

You could approach Starling to ask them to try and recall the payment, however they will most definitely come back saying that there are no funds in the beneficiary account to get the money back, which there won’t be as the money sent to Barclays has repaid an unauthorised debt you owe them. That’s if Starling would even agree to doing the payment recall in the first place considering the funds have been sent to an account in your own name.

Can you not see if you can have an agreed overdraft facility with Starling?
