Hi. So I have been self employed for the last 15 years non stop. All my returns were submitted by my accountant and he made a mess by submitting my returns late for some reason. Apparently he made a mistake he said. He missed the deadline of 23rd April and submitted all on 7th of May. Now online checking tool says that I am not eligible for support even though my average invome is below 50k and I have no other income.
I have submitted a dispute online and asked for case to be reviewed as All information is absolutely correct and I have never stopped my self employment.
Had anyone had this issue and has anyone been succesful with their disputes at all?
I feel let down by my accountant as he had all my records well before the deadline so it would be unfair for me to miss out on support that is so desperately needed now.
Thanks in advance!

If your accountant has been negligent you should take the matter up with them rather than HMRC.

So did your Accountant not submit your 2018/19 tax return by the deadline of 31st January 2020?  Did you receive the Late Submission Fine of £100 in February 2020?

Yes, correct. Not sure what happened though. I don’t want to get him into any trouble but I just feel properly let down. He now submitted everything when I started putting pressure on

So what happened about the Late Submission Fine?  Has he paid it or accepted responsibility for it?  Was there a reason he was late filing, maybe illness?  How long had he had your records?

All the Accountancy Practices I have worked in go all out to get all tax returns filed by 31st January even though many clients don't bring them in until the beginning of January, despite dozens of reminders throughout the year!

Not sure what happened to the penalty, probably had it deducted from potential refund or whatever. I never got involved in all the details and he used to be really good and I trusted him. He had records since mid December.
Not sure how my appeal will pan out now. Spoke to HMRC, they are loaded with appeals and currently are reviewing those submittednon 5th May. My appeal was submitted on 10th.
Had anyone ever had appeal succesful?

I doubt if he will be able to help me get the grant though. It is my priority at the moment. Can’t be chasing shadows but will not use him any futher

You won't get the grant from HMRC, but you can say you want your accountant to pay. If the accountant has been negligent, and you have lost money (the grant) as a result, you can seek redress. If he is a member of a professional body, he should have professional indemnity insurance.

    Thanks Jeremy,

I will wait for the final decision and then start looking into it as it was not my fault at the end of the day, had he done all on time, I would be laughing in my back garden now.
