Gold prices

Good Morning
I have some gold that I want to sell, it isn't scrap, it is good, excellent quality jewellery.
I have looked on line, spent what seems like hours.....to find a price per gram as a guideline, but all I can find is the online buyers for scrap, basing 9ct at around £14 average, or the gold markets which only list the current live price of gold as "gold" with no breakdown in to carat, but listing at average £44 per gram.
As the jewellery belonged to my late mum, and we wish to sell and donate to her charities, I don't want to just give it away, nor do I want to overprice and then risk not selling it,
Can anybody please advise me how i find the correct price for non scrap 9ct gold, so that i can be realistic about my prices?
Many thanks

Pure gold is 24 carats. So divide the gold price by 24, then multiply by the number of carats you have, and it will give you a rough guide.I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?1

Thank you for that, that's really useful0

Sorry about your mum - and that's a nice thing to do. Could you donate the jewelry to the charities and let them sell it? They may well be able to get a better price than you can.0

Thank you.
It is both my brother and I so we felt it better to sell, then split and donate to a charity that she supported of our own personal choice. I already donated to H4H, Alzheimers and MacMillan, but she would also have liked a dog trust or RSPCA, and a children's charity. It just makes it a bit more personal to each of us then.0 -
The market for old gold jewellery is based on its scrap, or melt value. Then depending on the craft involved in its manufacture a premium is added. Unless it is from a premium jewellery producer the scrap value is all you can expect.
Find out what the scrap value is and take to somebody who buys old jewellery. If they don't offer you at least the scrap value....walk away and go elsewhere.MSE has a thread for Hatton Garden Metals and is a reputable outfit..._1 -
You may also wish to consider taking the jewellery to an auction house? Good, excellent quality jewellery will command a premium on scrap price - just be sure to negotiate a good vendor's commission rate with the auctioneer, perhaps letting them know you are selling for charity will help sway this. Make sure the auction house you choose has an online bidding capacity in order to reach the widest audience / potential customers.1

Thank you all for your replies, most informative and helpful. Once jewellers are open I may take some of the more precious items and have a chat to them, it sounds a very sensible way forward, and then maybe consider using an auction.....I actually bought a beautiful ring with an insurance valuation of £2.5k for £300 at auction just before lockdown. Doubt i will ever wear it but it was just so pretty!0
