Wrong energy Tariff

My father used to look after all his finances as a retired accountant but now has dementia. We have now found out that when he switched energy tariffs/companies a couple of years ago his house was out onto a commercial rate for his residence. Now we have corrected this, we asked if we should have a refund on the prior months where he has been paying commercial rates as his home has always been a place of residence but they said no. Is this something the energy company should agree to as this seems to have been an obvious error?

If you can show that his previous tariff was domestic I would raise it as a formal complaint with a view to taking it to the ombudsman if they still refuse.
Also make sure he is registered with them as a 'vulnerable person'.
