Old grass seed

It's probably a silly question to ask but does grass seed have a used by date?

I spread some old seed that was sitting in my shed for a couple of years on a patch in the lawn about 4 weeks ago and still haven't seen any activity.

Normally lasts but how it's stored has an impact

Have you watered it in this dry weather, have the birds scoffed, any still showing where you put it?

It has been watered but it's easier to get quite dry in the weather we've been having, maybe I need to water the area on a daily basis. I can still seeds in there.

I always cover sown grass seeds with soil/compost; it identifies where to water and deters the birds to some extent.
