Gas Service

Options
Now that restrictions may be lifted does anyone know if my boiler cover warranty is invalid as it hasn’t been serviced due to coronavirus. The company says that they will only attend a breakdown.
Are they in breach of contract if they do not service my boiler.
My home is empty.
Help appreciated. Jamie

Most " services" only involve a cursory safety check and a dust down .

And they cannot penalise you for something they failed to do

Really.  If that's the case, the engineer who comes here every year must spend a lot of time doing nothing and twiddling his thumbs.

In my experience, over the past decade with the British Gas annual service, that's pretty much true, unless you actually tell them what you'd like them to do. The last guy that did our service spent most of the time on the phone to his mates complaining about the latest British Gas engineer tracking system on their vehicles. Sure, he did the usual plug in of their diagnostic system, and basically 'dusted down", as Browntoa implied. As usual, each year, with at least some knowledge of boiler issues, I asked the engineer to check the condensate trap for deposit levels, and also to check the likes of the Magnaclean filter. Unless you ask, you can be pretty sure that they won't bother doing anything much at all, apart from the very basic! it's largely from that, often, 'slapdash' attitude that problems happen in future.

I have a friend who is a gassafe engineer. He used to do work for an insurance company
What he took away is that the company pay their engineers next to nothing and therefore only the lowest quality engineers actually work for them.
Of course if one does this one is going to get bodged services
