There are a large number of poor players who, over time, lose to the good players and suffer the house rake, but come back because they enjoy doing it.What you say is true but I find it near hard to dislocate my brain to understand how people can enjoy losing time, money and most games to others. Even by chance winning the occasional game would be hollow as I would be aware that it's just part of a bigger overall defeat.Whenever social events have caused me to visit casinos I try to smile and remain positive while watching others getting poorer. Even with 'fun casinos' at weddings I usually give away my token allocation to people that might enjoy it more. Maybe I'm too hard nosed to spend money having fun.0

I generally know before I play whether I have a good chance of winning. If I feel patient and happy to spend 90 mins on a Sit & Go, I'll do well. If I feel impatient and fancy a quick game, I'll lose. So I save the higher stakes and longer formats for the former.
PS There are parallels with investing. Play poker for stakes above your comfort level and you will fold hands you should play. Invest above your risk tolerance and you will sell as soon as they fall.

If betting against drunken Americans could actually generate a positive expected return, you'd soon find yourself playing against several other sober hard-nosed Europeans all looking for the easy money against drunk Americans. Equilibrium would have been restored and the usual mechanics of zero-sum games would take over. The entire world has access to both the Internet and booze, and drunks are equally distributed across time zones.1
