Free Operating System for your Computer!

Options
You can download Linux for Free, and its just as good if not better than the software that the big M produces :)

I have downloaded it and just started to play about with it, although it takes a while to download it is well worth it.

Download Linux open Suse 10.3 as it also has office and drawing software included! :j

Let me know what u all think about it.

Make sure you download the correct version ( 32 bit for pc) , unless you have a Mac.

I have started to do up old computers we have at work in our workshop, and put this software on so i can then give them away to people and not bin em!

there is a linux magazine out right now (I forget which one, but is in WHSmiths) which has "all you need to get started in Linux" with Open Suse 10.3 on dvd. Ideal for the beginner and also for those who dont want to/cant download such a large file.
Or people who don't want to/cant burn an iso

    Linux is great fun
embarrassed to say I used to work for barclays..sorry

  • Open Solaris 10 from Sun Microsytems is also another freebie, i went to their head office this week, and ended up drooling over their servers! :p

If your not that geeky when it comes to computers though i would not recommend it, as it is not straightfoward to intergrate with microsoft and X86 platform software.
  • I am no way an expert in computers (i spent 2 weeks sleeping on the couch when I messed up my wifes laptop, was forgiven when i paid someone to fix it) but we have a old 330mhz puta for the kids which I installed ubuntu, boy was I impressed, quite tempted to move everything over to linux. Ubuntu is excellent for us novices and has a wonderful forum base to help anyone.

Another vote for Ubuntu... I LOVE it! And you can get pretty much any software you could ever want for free, with a few clicks of the mouse!

Is it true though that these free operating systems are more likely to be attacked by virus creators?

sure I read somewhere that Microsofts engineers are continually looking for ways to exploit weaknesses in free op systems so that they can disrupt them with viruses - or perhaps it was just a rumour.

What happens when the free providers refuse to provide updates unless you stump up cash?

Are we sure that the free providers havent included scumware that blocks out the much superior microsoft products?
:o Keep trying.........................what else is there to do? :o

if most people use windows, the hackers/virus creators know that they will get more results out of windows than linux.

if more people used linux than windows, hackers/viruses would target linux more than windows
