Refund for cancelled cruise

My Celebrity cruise in April was cancelled. After 8 weeks of getting the run around from  Celebrity and my travel agent, the travel agent has finally processed my refund request.. so far so good. The cruise was  paid for with two different credit cards, mine and my Mums. The travel agent told me the refund would go on to only one credit card, mine. When I queried this they said it was under the money laundering laws ?? I told them that wasnt good enough as I would have no way to pay my Mum her amount back onto her credit card from my card. The travel agent says that they will now pay all of the refund into my bank account and took the details.. I have now thought about this and am slightly worried .. is this even legal? I thought refunds had to be made to the card they were paid on.

What your TA first told you is a load of rubbish, nothing to do with money laundering (if it was then it would be returned to the  person that paid)
A refund  can be returned to the card,  or by any other means agreed to by parties involved.

Ok.. good to know! I suspected the money laundering bit was BS. It seemed to me that the were breaking the law by not refunding it to the cards on which the holiday was paid for.. Many thanks

May be no need to over think and over complicate matters.

I have had two significant travel refunds returned to credit cards. I just called both credit card companies to ask that the credit be transferred back to my bank account (the one where the monthly direct debits are taken from). No issues, done quickly.

If you applied the same principle in order to just get the refund you could then sort it out afterwards with the credit card/bank/mum.  I would be fearful in adding unnecessary complexity to the current situation.

I believe they only refund a credit balance,  so if OP credit card  is in the red then she wouldn't be able to repay OP's mum.

That's what I thought too. However, as I posted recently:

    Relevant figures (round sums):
11th May; Barclaycard balance before holiday refund £400
5th May appeared 11th May; Holiday refund £5100
12th May; Direct credit from Barclaycard to current account £5100
    12th May; Barclaycard balance £400

Was yours a brought forward balance,  or just spending in that month?

It was spending since previous statement.
My balance is always paid off in full, so no brought forward balance.

I believe that's why then, as your balance wasn't due until the statement is issued.
I expect (though not 100%)  that you would have got £4700  if  the £400 was a carry-over

    You're probably right.
In fact the Barclaycard customer service person I was securely corresponding with, offered either the net balance (£4700) or the full holiday refund. Having been assured there would be no charge or fee for transferring the full £5100 I chose that. I'm not due to pay the £400 until 9th June & I'd rather have £400 in my bank :)
