And still curious as to the reason your daughter gave for the phone being waterlogged?

The Phone is advertised as having Ingress protection of IP68.  The first part "6" refers to solid protection (i.e dust and sand) and the second part "8" refers to moisture.
That would mean on the IEC standard:
Protection from contact with harmful dust
Protected from immersion in water with a depth of more than 1 meter (manufacturer must specify exact depth)
However, it does not mean Waterproof.  Waterproof means something is impervious to water regardless of how long it is submerged. The IP rating refers to water-resistant, meaning a product can stop water entering it to some degree, but not entirely.
So it would survive being dropped in water or dropped in the sea but not held in water continuously.  The sensors inside the phone would tell the engineers whether it was submerged for too long.

I also have no idea where you think its advertised as waterproof?  Apple even have a whole article in support explaining:

There are YouTube videos where someone takes an iPhone and dunks it in water, I understand one is even taken on a dive and still worked. That is a whole world away from a manufacturer stating a product is waterproof. As others have mentioned, Apple state "water resistant", which is not the same as water proof.
You can understand that something made specifically for diving, such as a diving watch, will be covered under warranty for water ingress, but a phone is not designed for that and the manufacturer has no way of knowing whether you got the phone wet in a shower of rain, cleaned it with a pressure washer, or dropped it over the side of a boat into 100 foot of water...

Would that be because it's a diving watch rated to 600 meters?
