Car Hire Excess Insurance

I've just booked a fortnights car hire in Italy through Avis using my Tesco Clubcard vouchers - the cost less the vouchers will be £190 for the two weeks. However, on the phone Avis advised me that the excess is 1300 euros but I can pay for insurance to cover this locally at a cost of around 20 Euros a day - thereby nearly doubling the cost of the car hire!!!

As its Italy, I'd rather not take the risk of being stung should I have an accident (have you seen the way Italians drive?)

I have heard of companies that you can buy a policy from to cover the excess - cheapest one I've found is insurance4carhire.com at £49 per annum - anybody know better?

thanks
