Old meter, forcing us to stay on standard variable tariff?

Thank you for the information, very much appreciated. If the old storage heaters were terribly outdated and not working properly, and the house being fully renovated and modernised, what woukd the rationale be for it being a poor choice to remove them?
If we find nothing else connected to it, can we have it removed/switch to another supplier or are we still beholden to it?
With many thanks, Claire0 -
It may have been a poor choice if you removed a working system but either don't have a realistic replacement lined up, or will end up with something prohibitively expensive to run. What are your intentions?0

Is the reading on the second meter still increasing? (ie: is anything connected to it?)

Hi, no increase on reading and the electrics been on periodically when we've been here doing renovation works.
Intention is to get gas main run in and have both gas and electric. Complete new heating system through entire house. We definitely never intended to or wanted to keep the very old, very large and working poorly storage heaters it was running.
Looks like we're stuck on standard variable until the electrician comes to remove it 👍🏼

Tell your energy supplier you no longer wish to be on the dual rate supply as you have removed your off-peak heating system and have no need for the off peak supply.
They need to send someone out to remove the meter supplying the off peak consumer unit and you will then be able to use any tariff with any supplier you choose.
Make sure you definitely won't have any kind of night storage or immersion heater that's electrically powered and that all your hot water and heating will be gas fired before asking this of your electricity supplier, otherwise things will get quite pricey on the bill.
It will be the energy suppliers responsibility to remove the off peak meter, and your responsibility to hire a spark to remove the associated wiring and fuse box.2 -
Yes, for goodness' sake don't remove the meter yourself or through your appointed agent (= electrician) as that would constitute meter tampering, I believe and is a world of pain you don't need though I am sure no reputable electrician would dream of doing this anyway. Fighter 1986 said it spot on, I just thought I would add that in as a caution.
If you are sure you can have a mains gas supply, you are absolutely doing the best thing in getting rid of the old storage heaters; after all, we don't need any heating now, do we? With luck, we won't for months and your house will be a centrally heated palace by the time we do. All the best with your renovation project.1
