Voluntary redundancy v maternity leave?

Ive just started my maternity leave and planned to take 12 months off then work my 3 months notice and have a change in career.
ive worked for my current employer for 15 years in the university research sector.
I earn 27500 based on 36 hours p.a but work 21.75 so approx 16k p.a.
They are offering voluntary redundancy for those that apply before 31st July so I wondered whether it would be worthwhile applying for it although I know I’m probably unlikely to be accepted. They are trying to put me on furlough and my fixed term contract is due to end in June although I have been informed by my line manager this will be renewed for another 12 months.
Any advice would be appreciated.
