I may be a little early on this but slightly worried. Daughter is due to start final year this year having spent 3rd year in Anerica. We have completed Student finance and now contacting them to ask for reassessment due to furloughed. As we have no idea when work will resume calculating income is hard. Any suggestions? Employer refuses to indicate a return to work date.
Secondly rent, her rent is due to start 1st July, she was working whilst in america but obviously came home early. Job is open to return to at uni but its closed so cant return. Has applied for some work from home but...... no idea how she can pay rent.
So how will this work? She is awaiting a refund from uni insurers as had to pay for new flight and trying to get back accommodation costs. As rules state can 5 students from different houses suddenly live together when they cant even meet up? I'm thinking all sorts. Tried uni but they she doesnt qualify for any hardship.

A little bit early is always better than a little bit late ;-)
Rent: To make use of the Current Year Income Assessment, your income needs to have dropped 15% or more since the last financial year that they have used for assessment. Calculate your current year income as the furloughed amount (80% ?) across the full year, but let them know when that changes and be prepared for a reassessment and reduction of the next loan instalment.Rent: Are you sure the rent is due from 1st July? I know there are tenancies that run from the 1st July and allowed 'stuff' to be stored in the property, but the rent only becomes due once the student has moved in (in September).0 -
Generally I would say that if she has signed up to a tenancy starting in July then she needs to keep to the contract; particularly if she intends returning to university next term and living in the accommodation.
On government guidance, the one exception made to the rule banning people moving about between their main home and any second home was that students returning home from university at the end of term are allowed to return to their family home.
Given that exception was made it is quite possible that a similar exception would be made to students returning to university; though I expect that lockdown restrictions may be eased by next term.
As for a new household being created, there are 2 options. The most sensible would be for all the students to agree to self isolate for two weeks before moving in together. The other option, and it is what a lot of people in shared houses are forced to do, is to isolate within their new home, at least for the first two weeks. So not using shared areas at the same time and wiping surfaces between use.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Thanks for the replies. Tenancy starts 1st July and runs to end june 2021.We will presume the 80% for whole year and then call them if wages increase upon a return to work?
Just trying to work it out because if she is paying the rent she wants to be there but if no work needs to be at home as can work here hopefully (2 job interviews this week) until her work resumes back in Leeds. previously she has commuted and travelled home to work then back to uni. Cant see this being an option currently thought presently. There was an email sent this week suggesting studies may not resume face to face till January, total waste of 6mnths rent really. Especially when student finance doesn't even cover the rent.
