Options
Is there anyone out there that does just a phone lines anymore ?  From what i can see there are only a couple of places that do and getting a phone/broadband package is cheaper !
Line and very low call usage (few quid a month at most) is all i need.

They nearly all do basic line rental . But yes to add BB can be as little as £3 pm on top of line rental . That may give free weekend calls .

Even if you can find a line rental only deal, it's likely that you would pay more for the rental than your actual calls.
Have you considered a cheap pay-as-you-go mobile ?

We have phone only from BT - had it for 18 months.
We could also have used Post Office but as plusnet lost our cherished landline number and BT managed to get it back, I didn't want to risk the same thing happening again for a couple of quid a month
There was another 'smaller' company offering a similar service, but their name escapes me, sorry.

You should be able to get line rental plus unlimited anytime calls to UK geographic numbers starting 01 and 02, non-geographic numbers starting 03, and UK mobile numbers starting 071 to 075 and 077 to 079 for under £22 per month. Most landline providers have this option.

Avoid any deals with inclusive weekend only calls, or inclusive evening and weekend only calls, as these deals charge non-inclusive weekday calls to 01, 02, 03 and 07 numbers at around £9 to £12 per hour plus a connection fee of around 20p to 25p per call.

    As always, avoid calling any numbers starting 055, 056, 076, 084, 087, 090, 091, 098 or 118.

If you don’t have/want broadband, BT offer line rental only for £11.99/month

On top of the line rental you will also need calls.

Don't fall into the trap of having inclusive weekend only calls, or inclusive evening and weekend only calls, as these deals charge non-inclusive weekday calls to 01, 02, 03 and 07 numbers at around £9 to £12 per hour plus a connection fee of around 20p to 25p per call.

Look at deals withi anytime calls. BT currently has a choice on landline deals of either 500 minutes per month or unlimited calls. They are moving away from time-of-day-based deals to duration-based deals (similar to how mobile phone contracts have worked for several decades). Other landline providers have yet to follow BT's lead.
