Switching suppliers: Smart meter installation mandatory?

I suppose my question should be,
If I don't contact my supplier, should they contact me to arrange installation of a smart meter?
To answer your question though, I stuck with my previous supplier due to their excellent service and I'm also making a saving (based on actual calculations - not the comparison site savings info).0 -
They probably will when the current silliness is over. Smart meters are as fussy over social distancing as we are though, so are yours close together? If they're not close and cosy you can get gas meter sulk and you end up having to read it manually!2

Meters are close together (about 60cm apart, if that) so hopefully no issues with connectivity!0 -
I've had chichats with the e.on rep on here and it seems that smart meter tariffs are available on new contracts as long as you agree to have one fitted. When they actually get round to it is up to them, either because of general backlog (mine took a full year of waiting with SSE even before Coronavirus) or specifically because they can't come in because of the virus. Similarly if they fit one and the gas won't connect to the electric, that's not your fault - you agreed to the meter, so you still qualify for the tariff (that's the case with mine). She said it's called something like provisional smart meter tariff. That's the case with e.on anyway, assume it's similar with others.
