Refunding credit from credit card

I had a couple of refunds from a cancelled flight and hotel. It put my credit card into credit. The card company have refused to refund to my bank account (despite a direct debit being set up) and are insisting on refunding the credit card I used to clear the original balance (via balance transfer). Whilst not a disaster, it’s a pain because it will just put that other card into credit as I no longer use it (but do have access to it).
Is this normal?
To me, it feels like it should be immaterial how the balance was paid that particular month.

How much is it and what is the name of the credit card company?
Just leave it where it is and spent it I suppose.0 -
I'm pretty sure nationwide do this from memory. It is rather annoying, especially if it's a large amount you wouldn't have otherwise spent.
I imagine you're entitled to get it moved but I'm not 100% if there's a legal requirement?
I'm due to get about £1100 returned soon, and if they won't put it in my current account my plan is to pay my council tax using the credit card, I'll effectively end up with the cash on my current account after a few months.0 -
Update: just spotted this thread. Looks like you can call them and ask for a transfer free of charge provided you don't go under your credit limit.

I’d rather have the cash back to put in an ISA for flight next year. It’s over £1200 with Creation.0

We were refunded the cost of our holiday on to my husband's Nationwide credit card.He rang them and requested that they transfer the balance from the credit card into our Nationwide current account, which they did with absolutely no problem (or cost!) and after having told us it would take between three to five working days to process, we were pleasantly surprised when it was in the current account by the next day.
We also received a smaller refund of the cost of theatre tickets onto my Nationwide card; as it was a comparatively small amount we didn't bother to have it moved off the card, but simply used the amount for normal spending.A cunning plan, Baldrick? Whatever it was, it's got to be better than pretending to be mad; after all, who'd notice another mad person around here?.......Edmund Blackadder.0
