Merging roles & redundancy

Hi, I've been in my current role for 13 months as a full time employee, and as a result of COVID-19, my pay rate was cut by 40% for April and May, with a reduction in hours from 5 days to 3 days. Last week I was told that my role would be merging with another role, and that he and I would need to apply for the role. This was not advertised internally or externally, I attended the interview and was told that I was unsuccessful in the role. My notice period is 3 months. Am I eligible for furlough (prior to the pay cut I earnt more than £50k)? Is the company allowed to merge roles like this without advertising and let one of us go like that?

As the merged the role and they had two people who could do the job why would they advertise it elsewhere?  

How was your reduction in hours agreed? Was it temporary? The company can only furlough if you agree, so if they are making you redundant anyway why would you?

You had a one in two chance of getting the job. It seems odd to complain that the job wasn’t advertised internally/externally to make your odds of getting the position worse!

As you’ve been there less than two years you might not even get redundancy. Depends on what your company decides to do.
