Another insurance excess question

My step son, a home carer had a non fault accident with a delivery van, he has business insurance as required. It was fairly straightforward, this van turned across his path and step son couldn't avoid him. We spoke to his insurer at the scene, his car was recovered, the insurer organised a rental car from Enterprise and a claims management company took on the case. During the Corona Virus we were told that things were moving slower and the 3rd party had been contacted. So 7 weeks later the Claims Management company wrote to us saying they had got no further with the 3rd party insurer and handed our claim back to my step son insurance. They want to pay the agreed value, less his excess and any salvage costs. We are concerned that the hire company will come after us now, he is still in the hire car until the claim is settled. Because of his age 24, he had a high excess on his business insurance. So that excess of £520 will not be paid. Our other problem is trying to replace his car as dealers and garages are not open to the public.
This raises three worries, mounting costs of the hire car, the salvage and the excess, none of which we had any say in.
What wisdom can the money savers offer?

Some dealers and garages are open - and, of course, there's private sellers - or he could continue to rent a car privately. The liability for an insurer to pay for the hire car usually ends at the acceptance of a write-off value.

Excess will depend on whether he's held to be at fault or not - and if the other insurer hasn't paid, that counts.

Hire car - I presume it's a credit-hire "accident management", so that he's signed that he WILL pay for it if the other party don't...?
