Shell Energy and Smart Meters
Options
Morning all - doing my energy switch via Cheap Energy Club to British Gas but I noticed this "Important" note on the results for Shell...."You'll need to get smart meters installed with this tariff and you can't get it if you already have them. If you have them and switch to it (or refuse to get them), you can be moved onto Shell Energy's expensive standard tariff and be charged exit fees."
What stands out to me is the "if you already have them....." part. I guess that Shell get some payout from the Government for every Smart Meter they get installed but potentially move customers to a Standard tariff just because they already have a Smart Meter is that really fair / correct etc etc?

I suspect it has more to do with their inability to get data from SMETS1 meters and some complexities around getting data from SMETS2 that they didn't install. They wouldn't be able to claim replacing those meters in their target numbers and if they are not sure they can read them then they have no incentive to take on the customer...
