There is no hard and fast rule. You need to check each insurance company's policies before committing.0

Usually, two years. But you need to check the paperwork.quattros said:Thanks Again for the Replies , So little confused , let's Forget the 17 years NCD , but go by 9 years as most I looked at show that figure in the dropdowns , so let's say I dont protect it this year and have an accident/claim then that will drop down to 7 years so loose 2 year or maybe 3 , or goes to 3years NCD ?0 -
I see ok i was under the impression it drops to 3 year overall from say 9 years , So basically minus 2 or 3 years off the 9 depending on insurance.AdrianC said:

No, it won't drop down to 7. If you look at the examples I gave most will probably drop you to either 4 or 3 years.quattros said:Thanks Again for the Replies , So little confused , let's Forget the 17 years NCD , but go by 9 years as most I looked at show that figure in the dropdowns , so let's say I dont protect it this year and have an accident/claim then that will drop down to 7 years so loose 2 year or maybe 3 , or goes to 3years NCD ?
Download and read the prospective policy documents and they should tell exactly what will happen.0 -

Yes, I looked at my policy yesterday after your reply it quotesneilmcl said:
No, not 2 years, I've already given 2 examples where clearly this is not the case. Can you provide one insurance policy that states an unprotected NCB of 9 years will drop to 7.AdrianC said:

"In line with the rest of the market. If you haven't protected it, your No claim Discount will be reduced by two years for each non recoverable claim within a policy year."
It was on that premise why I had opted out of protecting, however that decision is on an individual basis.
What is confusing is the table above the shows which is that a claim reduces to 3yrs 2 claims to one 1yr NCD.

If they regard 5yr as max (or the illustration is starting from 5yr) that's right.DUTR said:
