iced coffee

I have become rather addicted to those iced coffees/drinks you can buy in the cans/cups.
There are expensive so want to make my own.
Just making a coffee milkshake with milk and coffee powder does not seem to work, has anyone found a close match to make these themselves? or know the secret?
Thanks

  • My daughter found a recipe /method on instagram and reckons it's just as good as the commercial ones.

Half-fill a glass with milk (approx 250ml) and a little ice and pop it back in fridge.
Put 1 tablespoon of instant coffee, 1 tablespoon of sugar and 1 tablespoon of hot water in a bowl, and whisk until frothy and thick. We use a hand whisk and this can take about 5 mins. Spoon the mixture into the chilled milk and stir it in.
    Hope this helps ☺

This is Dalgona coffee, one of the latest internet sensations, so I'm lead to believe.
I prefer some strong brewed proper coffee, or even better cold brew out of the fridge, topped with ice cold milk. I do not add sugar.

Mixing espresso with condensed milk and ice is a popular drink in Vietnam. It probably has the level of bitter sweetness that makes you enjoy the iced coffee in a can!

That brings back memories! But looking at the ingredient list and given that it is a drink that is sipped rather than bolted, its not going to do your teeth much good - by my calculation it is 36% sugar at the very least:
    Ingredients:
Sugar, Water, Chicory Extract (25%), Dried Coffee Extract (4%)

I love iced coffee but am happy with freeze-dried half milk/half water over ice. Yum.

loads of ice, melt coffee powder in a little hot water, pour over ice, add cream/milk and whizz it up (i use a magic bullet).  if you add a coffee syrup as well tastes even better.    when I make it its like a  coffee frappucino type drink
on another note for a really good latte,  heat your milk in the microwave and put in a 4pt milk bottle and shake like hell then pour over your hot coffee,   makes it lovely and frothy

My usual recipe is 3 x the amount of instant coffee you'd use in a hot coffee, the same amount of sugar, with just enough water to dissolve it all.  Top up with cold milk and ice.  If you make a big batch of the coffee mix, you can keep it in the fridge until needed.  If the amount of milk makes it too rich, use some water as well.

Sometimes I use some vanilla or caramel syrup as well.

I have been experimenting. I have kept some glass containers from the shop brought versions and have been re-filling these with my homemade version once a week, its is easier to make a few at a time than just one when needed.
I am still working out the quantities to use but I found coffee/cocoa powder/camp works (I don't use sugar as this is in the camp but you could add it it you prefer it sweeter). I put in the powders with a small amount of water and heat/microwave to help it to mix in well, then add the camp and milk, give a good shake and leave in the fridge until cold.

It does seem like the secret to a nice latte is a £1 microwave saucepan but interesting that it works well for iced coffee also.

Friend of mine works in the factory that produces it he says its condensed milk that gives it that special texture/flavour!
That is also why its so expensive in the supermarket as condensed milk is not cheap!
Already tried it many times with milk , water, milk powder , coffeemate and yip he was right just add some boiling water to condensed milk and add it to your coffee / milk mixture then chill and it tastes just like those expensive £2 iced coffees from Starbucks etc!!!
