Credit card company taken direct debit payment for statement after receiving online payment

Nothing to do with computing. Direct Debit collection is regulated. Has been for decades.digalumps said:yes I know it's a strange in these days of instant computers but that does seem to be the way it works0 -
lather30 said:I recently part-paid my credit card statement (Barclaycard) via an online bank transfer (Halifax), which my online credit card statement shows they acknowledge receipt of on the same day it was sent. Three days later, the credit card statement shows them having also taken the direct debit payment for the same bill from my bank account, which has driven the account in question into overdraft.
I've sent Barclaycard a secure online message via their website asking for an explanation as to why they have taken the direct debit when they clearly acknowledge receipt of the online payment three days previously. I've also asked them to refund the money taken via the direct debit on the grounds that they had already received payment via the online banking transaction, and have therefore been paid twice and effectively taken the money without my permission. I'm currently waiting for their reply, which that say I should get within 24 hours.
As I'm self-employed and currently can't work due to the fact that my job requires fairly close contact with customers for periods of several hours at a time, money is of great concern to me right now. So to have someone effectively steal money from my account is not what I need right now. Does anyone have any advice on what else I can do to get the money back that, to my mind, they should never have taken from my account?
As others have said, its simply a timing issue.
If you use Barclaycard app, before you authorise an additional payment, it will tell you what impact it will have, if any, on the DD it will next collect. I regularly make such payments, but always know what DD will be taken.
You could ask them to refund any credit balance.2 -
Indeed, my Halifax Clarity card operates in this way, but its clearly set out in the T&Cs.TadleyBaggie said:Some providers won't adjust the DD payment even if you pay it off weeks before the DD is due. I have a Sainsbury's CC with DD to pay off in full every month. It was sitting at £1400+ so I did a balance transfer to a 0% card over 2 weeks before the DD was due to be taken, they still took the full £1400+ putting the card into credit! I sighed but didn't !!!!!! and moan, just used the card as normal and used up the credit balance over the next couple of months or so.2 -
I've had several Barclaycard accounts, always paid them in full/manually.digalumps said:Yes good point that just to reiterate to everybody if you pay your Barclaycard or indeed any card manually so that they never take the direct debit then after 13 months the direct debit will automatically cancel
you might not notice this
Direct Debit has never been cancelled automatically on any of these accounts, with the longest relationship on a CC being 11 years.Life isn't about the number of breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away. Like choking....0 -
If you never pay by dd how do you know it hasnt been cancelled!
I have definitely done the same as you i e just paid off each month but had a direct debit in place just in case
about 2 years later I was on holiday and didn't pay off and they try to take the direct debit but it didn't work hence no payment that month
it was all sorted out but they did tell me at the time that an unused direct debit would be put to sleep effectively if it wasn't used after 13 months
to be fair it wasn't Barclaycard0 -

If you google dormant direct debit you will find several hits on the subject0 -
Because the DD is still active on current account and has correct, valid details with BC.digalumps said:If you never pay by dd how do you know it hasnt been cancelled!Life isn't about the number of breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away. Like choking....0 -
yes but would they actually pay on an ancient dd not used for years should barclays try and claim an amount.0

It might on the current account. But NOT on the credit card side. Which is what generates the request.mcpitman said:

If you are so sure, then let the DD claim this month and come back and tell us the outcome.Life in the slow lane1 -
I don't need to prove anything or pay less than I normally would to please an internet stranger.born_again said:

Absolutely active from the Barclaycard side. Absolutely active from Current Account. No point debating the matter.Life isn't about the number of breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away. Like choking....0
