Student bank account confusion

Apologies if we're missing something, but can you apply for student loans without a student bank account? All the accounts we've looked at can't be opened without an unconditional offer or results and my son has neither! The UCAS site says applications close on 22 May so how do you apply if you can't input account details? Any help appreciated!

looks like you can https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-student-finance/when
After you register at your university or college you'll usually get your maintenance loan paid directly into your bank account at the start of each term.
Use your student finance account to:
- update your bank details - for example if you open a student account
- check how much you'll be paid
- check when you'll be paid
