The Range Refusing To Refund Unless You Purchase Something

I bought a set of alcohol marker pens from the The Range on Monday and when I got home and opened them, the quality was very poor, so I returned them to store today and asked for a refund.
I was told I could have a refund, BUT, because the item I had purchased was not classed as an essential item, I would have to buy something that was classed as an essential item, before they would refund.
Surely this Is in breach of my consumer rights?
If I buy something that is not if the quality expected, I am entitled to a refund.
How can they insist you buy something else to get a refund?

There is nothing on their website about this policy and no signs displayed in store advising this before you purchase.
I would also add, they were very happy to take my money and sell me the “non essential “ item in the first place.

This signifies Companies abusing the current situation to make their own ridiculous rules up.

That's not correct.Keefyd said:If I buy something that is not if the quality expected, I am entitled to a refund
Just because something isn't of the quality that you expected doesn't automatically mean that you are entitled to a refund or replacement as when assessing the quality of goods, the price paid can be taken into account.
If the goods are faulty then yes, you are entitled to a refund but low quality doesn't always mean faulty.
How much did the set of pens cost? and how does the price paid compare to similar items sold elsewhere?
