I don't understand why the buyer is apparently furious - do they not know we're in the midst of a pandemic?! I wonder what the international destination is, how their postal system is coping, and how often post to that country is going considering all the logistical delays there are.

I also don't understand why the default assumption is theft - if it claimed to be delivered but wasn't then maybe that might be somewhere on the list of a rational person's possible explanations, but certainly not the default conclusion when the tracking hasn't shown it moving. Things get overlooked, slip through cracks (many years ago an expensive set of viola strings did that; they turned up a few months later with an apology that they'd fallen down beside some structure in the office, I can't remember what exactly - they saw fit not to charge me the customs fee!), get stuck at the bottom of bags, etc. The only time a tracked item I sent got lost, it bounced around Europe for a bit (the tracking was most confusing, saying it had returned to me then they attempted delivery in Germany?!) but it still made it back to me eventually.

If the OP is genuinely interested, here's RM's own international page giving a general overview of how it is in each country at the moment: https://personal.help.royalmail.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5317/~/international-incident-bulletin

We are working with our airline and postal/courier partners across the globe to maintain services, however delays should be expected. Many countries have implemented special measure to combat the spread of Coronavirus COVID-19, especially for signature service to maintain social distancing.

The number of countries that we can access is changing daily. Most major export routes remain open, and we continue to accept and process mail, although customers may experience varying levels of delay.

There are significant delays to a number of countries right now due to a lack of available transport links and suspension of certain country’s postal operations.
