We have signed up to get new windows put into our house by a big company a few months back, and they were due to be fitted last month. Obviously with what's going on this didn't go ahead as planned, and was put off by the company well in advance of the installation date. We paid an initial deposit as you do when you sign up for these things. As things stand, none of us know if we will have jobs to go back to in the next few months, and the added expense of new windows is something I would like to put off. Would I be within my rights to cancel or postpone this?

Basic (without knowing T/C) is that NO you just can't cancel and get a deposit back. If they were due to be fitted a month ago, then odds on they have already been made and are just waiting a team to fit them.Life in the slow lane1 -
As above, you need to check your contract.1

I wouldn't expect to get the deposit back. Looking at the terms and conditions it looks like it's in the company's favour with what is going on (as you would expect). They did cancel a full month before they were due to be fitted so they're perhaps not ready. We are in exceptional circumstances.0

Maybe contact them to let them know the situation and agree to assess it when things return to some sort of normality. You'll have a better idea of long-term finances and in the meantime, they aren't exactly pushing for an installation date. I'm sure they'd rather retain the prospect of a completed job with payment over just a retained deposit, even if they have to wait a while for it.1

That was also in the back of mind. Perhaps things will be fine and I'll still have a job at the end of all this, but it's a big take on in the current climate. Thanks for the advice1
