British Gas changed the tariff extras.

We renewed with British Gas, even though EDF were slightly cheaper because they offered the free home care .  Now just over a month later so the cooling off period has ended, they write to say as we are existing customers we cannot have the free home care. Is this allowed or have they changed the agreement?

    Hi,
    think that is the norm,
from MSE newsletter this week, CEC British Gas Switch,
Important: Homeowners get 'free' boiler cover for one year if they don't have it already. However, it automatically renews at about £2.50/mth after, even if you leave the tariff - so remember to cancel it if you don't want it.

If you were already on the tariff then it is clear from the start that the free Home Care is only for one year, so renewing on the same tariff does not get you another year...
If you already had Home Care then as already pointed out, you don't get it free even if it is your first year on the tariff.
They didn't change the agreement, the offer was clear from the start...

No totally different tariff and the home care we had ended before this new tariff started.

Sorry, when you said 'renewed' it implied you were already on the tariff.
So how did you get onto this tariff? Did you select it from the BG website or were you using one of the 'switching' sites?

  • Hi,
the different tariff makes no difference, you can't change tariff every year and expect the 'free' cover to roll on, as an existing British Gas customer you only get it once.
Seems it's not so 'free' after all if you ever have to call them out, there are excesses, have a read of this thread.
