Yeah it doesn’t seem like this team will give you another opportunity. It’s unfortunate but this is the problem in applying for jobs in teams where you have previously turned them down.
Is there anything I could do? Or is it a case of just accepting it.

I'm just surprised as it feels like I've effectively I've been blacklisted from that team because i couldn't take an old post up? Doesn't seem at all right as I haven't done anything wrong but lose out on good opportunities because of it?
Yes i suspect you have been. It might not seen 'right', but it's legal. I suspect applying for a job, then declining it (whatever the reason, but especially one that you should've thought about) also isnt right.

How would I know they'd change the length of contract after interview? That wasn't my fault, simply them wanting to reduce it to match maternity leave, which wasn't advertised? If they changed the salary after offering it I'm sure they'd be in the wrong.
Perhaps i missed it, but in your OP you said you declined because it was short term and you had / have a child to support? You've clarified now that they reduced it, so fair enough.

    That said, still lawful.

Have they specifically said they are not interviewing you because you previously declined a role?  It could just be they had a huge number of excellent candidates to choose between.  You might get an answer if you ask HR whether it is worth applying in future or not or what roles they think you are the best match for.

It’s difficult really to know what happened. If you know anyone in the team you could have an informal discussion with them and see what the problem is.

Sometimes though people just get annoyed if they think a candidate is messing them around. It’s probably unfair but if they’ve turned against you then your option are limited.

    Exactly!

Many people tend to forget that nearly everything about employment is "discrimination" and 95% of it is perfectly lawful! Who shall we appoint? Who shall we promote? Who shall we sideline? Who shall we give a pay rise? An employer can decide these questions in almost any way they like, as long as it is not on one of the relatively few grounds that are prohibited by law.

Nothing says you have to appoint the best qualified person and based on what the OP has posted here, their employer has done nothing unlawful.
  • Ask for the reasons why you haven't been shortlisted and tell them that you want to know so you can improve your chances of being selected in the future.

Well you can ask but they are not obliged to tell you. OK, if they are written down somewhere the OP may be able to force disclosure by means of a subject access request under the GDPR but in the real world that is not likely to help with future applications!

Yes. Ask for feedback. You seem convinced that you weren't selected for interview because you previously turned down another role, but there may be any number of other factors (which the employer may or may not tell you), not least they had better applicants to interview. You aren't going to change their minds, though, so either accept it or move on.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!
  • Op it may  not be something you have done

Sometimes jobs are advertised and they already know who they are going to hire.

    Its really frustrating

It's entirely possible that they had a number of applications from their permanent employees and either don't want to increase headcount or have been told they can't increase permanent headcount.  It's not necessarily a conspiracy.
