End of July redundancy

It looks like a lot of people will be made redundant on this date. If the company has to pay 50% of the £2500 from then. No way will they pay people £1250 to stay at home ongoing. Very distressed

This is just speculation at the moment... I do however think you might need to speak to your GP about managing your stress and anxiety, I appreciate things are rough right now but it appears you might benefit from some help to manage that.

No one knows what the changes to the scheme will be after July. It may be that the government will continue to pay 80% of the wage for those for whom there is no work. They have said they will be looking to allow furloughed employees to undertake some work for their employers - in these circumstances it would be completely wrong for the government to pay the current rate of furlough. It may therefore be that employer contribution are going to be from those employers who have furloughed employees back at work part time rather than all employers. We simply don't know. Winding yourself up at this point is not doing yourself any good.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

Thought the employer contribution was going to be 20%? Not 50%.

Couple of websites - Guardian and Telegraph. You're right it's unconfirmed though.

Reasonable that employees that least start to earn their keep. Many a business isn't in the greatest state of financial health. Not sure that the July date is of any relevance. Keeping employees on furlough isn't a cost free option for employers. People have already been losing their jobs in steady numbers already.

Nobody knows how much the employer will have to contribute from August  so no point thinking the worse.  Surely your company will look at all the options before making people redundant. Your company might bring some of you back part time, or you might have to take annual leave.  Surely redundancys are also expensive. Let's hope that the furlough will drop to 60 % and then the employer contribute 20 %.

Any planned redundancies will be known about well before the end of July which is why the chancellor moved now. And why you are seeing the larger redundancies being talked about now.  The rules are where 20-99 people are being let go from a site, then 30 days consultation is need. It's 45 days (i.e. from mid-May) where it is more than 100.

His announcement of no change until the end of July means that the cliff edge has been moved from mid-May to mid-June. What I can't understand, and which appears to indicate them making it up as they go along (see previous moving advice), is why the detailed proposals for July-October won't be coming out for 2 weeks. Employers are close to pressing the button without waiting 2 weeks.
