    Any (UK or EU) website following that methodology is breaking the law (as I recall). There was an EU directive a few years ago (that became law in all EU member states) that mandated that all such things must be opt IN.
    From my experience of these companies the opt in is:
    If online purchase, agreeing to the T/C and sometimes something that is included in purchase invoice. 
    ie, item & trial period as a separate item.
    If via phone, they ask if you would be interested.
    If via post, it is usually are you interested in this offer or included in the T/C which of course you have to agree to.
