What do the terms and conditions of his contract say?
Would he be able to rearrange for a different set of holidays, such as half-term?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Is he planning to just never get married if its cancelled? Why not just postpone until another school holiday?

If the venue cancel - because they are legally obliged to stay shut he should get a full refund
If he cancels because of concerns over CV then it depends on the booking contract and/or his insurance

If they are cancelling they have to refund, and by refusing to do so they are breaking the law. Insist on a full refund unless an acceptable alternative is offered.

See https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52483453 and report them to the CMA

Competition watchdog launches probe into coronavirus refunds

On 30 April, the Competition and Markets Authority launched an investigation into firms that fail to give customers proper refunds for coronavirus-related cancellations, and will be partly focusing on wedding providers.

It's also said it would usually expect customers to be given a full refund if restrictions mean a service can't be provided or accessed, or if a firm cancels without providing the goods or service – so you could use this to argue for a refund if the provider refuses.

At this stage he would need to be referring to the contracts T&C's as the government are not currently saying weddings cannot go ahead in August. In fact they are considering small ceremonies again from the 1st June. If your sons wedding was before 31st May then the CMA full refund would apply as the contracts are frustrated but for August they will need to sit it out and wait, or postpone to another date during a school holiday, which unfortunately may be a week day considering how far in advance wedding suppliers book.
  • When my son was in secondary school, one of his teachers got married in June as she had had the agreement of the school's management team to have time off for her honeymoon.

Could he have a discussion with the Head to see how open they would be for him to have time off if he did need to rearrange it?
