How to take name off joint account

Hi I moved in with family members 2 years ago for a short time. As it was a rented property the estate agents had told British gas all of our names for the account. Although my name was on the account - I never knew it was as I was not the lead on the gas account so never received any letters. I had an arrangement where I paid money to the lead person and they paid what needed to be (or so I thought). The lead person had missed many payments for months. When I found out it was paid immediately although i am now sitting with this affecting my credit file. How do i take my name off of it as I'm fed up of arguing with British gas over it. How could i have paid it if they never sent me any letters, bills or correspondence about late payments?! I would have paid sooner if I knew.

The account is no longer active and paid but I know it will sit on my account for 6 years!

Have you issued an official complaint to British Gas? 
By doing so you can then take it to the energy ombudsman if they completely refuse to budge and gives you a deadlock reply.

BG won't do anything now as the account is settled and closed.
Your credit history will not be altered as it accurately reflects the way you (with others) handled your credit account in the past.
No arguements to be had.
