Avoiding public transport

Regarding masks, the only ones that'll help you are the filtering masks. One made out of cloth is useless. If you can breath while having it on, its no good.
The guidance issued today recommends "face coverings" when social distancing can't be maintained e.g. public transport.

(p27 "As more people return to work, there will be more movement outside people's immediate household. This increased mobility means the Government is now advising that people should aim to wear a face-covering in enclosed spaces where social distancing is not always possible and they come into contact with others that they do not normally meet, for example on public transport or in some shops. Homemade cloth face-coverings can help reduce the risk of transmission in some circumstances. Face-coverings are not intended to help the wearer, but to protect against inadvertent transmission of the disease to others if you have it asymptomatically.
A face covering is not the same as a facemask such as the surgical masks or respirators used as part of personal protective equipment by healthcare and other workers.")

i agree. i dont understand the relevance of your response to mine, but i agree.
Easy to pick holes and personalise a complex topic. People are going to have to learn to fend for themselves rather than expect a nanny state to constantly find all the solutions.. Been a long time since the last real recession.
I agree with you and I’m a strong proponent of personal responsibility, however the case in question was someone working with multiple conditions so hardly someone who’s a slacker and sounds like they’ve been just about managing for a while, but not fallen back on benefits. A bit of kindness and empathy would go a long way x

For those who are confused the Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, led the Downing Street Daily Press Briefing on Saturday (9th). Can be found on YouTube.

IIRC the average journey (?commute) outside London is 3 miles. Average journey including London is 5 miles. Encouraging people to continue cycling/ jogging/ walking, longer term e-scooters and electric cars. With 'social distancing' AND trains/ tubes/ buses running a full service there is only 10% previous capacity.

If you need to use public transport do so. If you can travel outside 'rush hour' do so. In my deprived city many do not run a car so rely on buses for getting shopping in and travelling to the bank or Post Office, it will not just be key workers.
The average is extremely misleading - presumably the arithmetic mean.
there are millions of London commuters who do much longer journeys by train as few can afford to live in the city (and the accommodation doesn’t exist anyway), those journeys are mostly not cyclable.
this is being averaged out against many very short journeys where presumably people already walk e.g. if you live above the shop.
to average someone who lives above a shop with someone who commutes 30 miles and say they can both cycle 15 miles is not particularly helpful.
People in London already walk, cycle and shift their hours due to intolerably crowded public transport
Tell the Transport Secretary not me. I was brought up in London, later in Cambs commuter belt. Sibling remained in London until <40, now commutes in from Herts.

As I said "For those who are confused [by waffling Boris]...... If you need to use public transport do so. If you can travel outside 'rush hour' do so."

  • Yes, thinking of having a chat at local station, asking what times would be best to travel.

i feel for those who have no choice regarding getting to work on time, with reduced services, etc. I doubt many people would be able to ask their employer to hang on whilst they wait for a less crowded train.

Im wondering what manchester Victoria will be like......it was always an experience there!

Let us know what they tell you!

I remember in normal times that trains into London on a Sunday would be quite busy, at any time of day.   Though that was mostly day-trippers who won't be around now.  So perhaps Sunday is the quietest day.

My idea had been that trains going in to London on a Monday or Tuesday around 2 or 3pm would be quiet, because there wouldn't be many workers going in or casual trips taking place at those times.

I have plenty of empathy on a personal level. Trouble is that the business has to stay afloat. With no business there's no work. There are no easy answers. However much people search for them. Very difficult times lie aheads for many. Which is going to come as a complete and utter shock after years of low unemployment.

    I will.
Not sure when he’s going to begin travelling but possibly in next 3 weeks or so.
This is in north west, so not sure how it would relate to rest of country.
One positive about buses where I live is that many have an open top. I’ve convinced myself if I have to use one in future the wind will blow the virus away 😁

    bad rabbit,
Yes you really need to speak to carlisle station.
Those responding need to realise it is not the relatively easier travel into and around London - in terms of public transport availability. It is a 140 mile round trip; plus currently....

Ok, and understanding that posters are trying to help......it is not going to be easy anywhere but a quick check for the morning's trains from Carlisle to Man Victoria ...leave by 5:45 to arrive by eight, (with only 1 change); next 09:30 and then 10:30 arrivals with two changes. Then being the West Coast mainline, any problems on the tracks no real practical alternative, Sunday might be quieter but then that's when engineering work ta!es place with bus replacements.

As a journey, in general, tis worse than York to Kings Cross, Bristol to London and more like Exeter to London!
It looks like it would be a very difficult journey for the foreseeable future?

    Thanks for the info:)

The journey will be from Windermere to greater manchester, and back again 2 days later.
    So south lakes only.
After checking it seems the usual trains are still running every 3 hrs.
Only concern is how many will already be on it coming from it’s departure - manchester airport.
He wouldn’t travel early, and can choose whichever time suits him, so no issue there. Sunday was always a bit of a pain but might be easier now? No idea! Not a lot of folk go all the way to Windermere, most get off by Lancaster .
  • It’s not really the times or regularity which worry us, it’s the potential for crowding or queuing. The service doesn’t offer much info on how they’re expecting to deal with that.
I know that a few people are concerned about returning to regular jobs and having to deal with service reductions. It does seem odd to reduce the amount of trains when people will be returning to work. It may create more issues for distancing. Aargh!
