Just dead now - think the switch may be duff.

Have you followed the wires from the switch to the motherboard and checked the connector?

if thats what you think it is, have you tried powering it up with a jumper placed over the pins for the on/off switch?

i've seen my mate do this before, but he did it with a metal screw driver

Would not have a clue where to start with this.

The processessor has not been overclocked, photos here showing old white paste:

don't know how to make it one word!

The switch has been catching on the case for some time now you have to press it and then press the case to release it. Sometime the fan looks like it will start and then not, and sometimes if I try again it starts.

Honest, I have ensured all cables seated.

It may just be the reset/start switch then, as this causes the motherboard to do a hard reset and boot-up. Can you remove the switch from the front panel of the case?

Did you clean and apply new paste?

When you start up does the computer power up and processor fan run?

The switch it not like a common house hold switch, in that all it does is short out two pins to change the state to start, then if those pins are made again for a longer period the machine will shut down.

In that case - no bleeps!

You should get one beep, one beep is good more than that is not.

Do you normally here one beep?

I still think you have not fitted the processor heat sink correctly.

BritBrat , I cannot disagree with you, all I can say is it is in place, the metal clips are down tight and if you press on the top it does not move. I do not have the paste and PC shops are not around the corner. Looks like I'm defeated with this and need to find some expert help.

Probably see me at Aldi queuing in the morning.

Thanks to all of you, your assistance have been greatly appreciated even though we have not succeeded.

    Any other thoughts still appreciated/
    Kind Regards

    Got a Maplins near by?
    http://www.maplin.co.uk/

    They will have it both.

Or go online and order it, better to wait than make things worse.

If you ever remove the heat sink or even disturb it you have to clean it and remake the thermal compound connection.
  • You may have dislodged the CPU when you removed the heatsink. Try re-seating it but be very, very careful that you do not bend/damage the pins.

    See here: http://www.gen-x-pc.com/build3.htm

You should stil use some new TIM paste.

That comment just made me think of something else.

Look at that link above, the heat sink can only go in one way around i.e.1 of 4 possible ways.

If you have it wrong it will not be in contact with the processor, but you still need to remake the thermal heat sink compound and untill you get the cleaner there is not much you can do at the moment.

But take it back out and look at it closely to make sure you know the correct fitting orientation.

I am sure that will be the problem so long as you have not already fried the processor.
