SE grant ‘adversely affected’

Trying to find out what ‘adversely affected’ means or rather if it includes things like having to buy equipment to facilitate working from home, loss of clients due to delivering the service online rather than in person, having to alter working hours and things like that?
My husband is a piano teacher and has been able to deliver his lessons from home but has had to invest in equipment and resources to facilitate this, leaving us out of pocket.

    See guidance at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/claim-a-grant-through-the-coronavirus-covid-19-self-employment-income-support-scheme:

"Your business could be adversely affected by coronavirus if, for example:

    • you’re unable to work because you:
      • are shielding
      • are self-isolating
      • are on sick leave because of coronavirus
      • have caring responsibilities because of coronavirus
    • you’ve had to scale down or temporarily stop trading because:
      • your supply chain has been interrupted
      • you have fewer or no customers or clients
      • your staff are unable to come in to work"

Thanks guys, I’d read this but as it states your business could be adverse affected if FOR EXAMPLE, it suggests this is not the limit of the adverse affects.

That is true but it’s the only guidance available. From what you said he has fewer customers so seems to fit one of the examples anyway.

  • hi guys, i was wondering if i could get some help, i was deemed ineligible for the self employment support scheme and i don't know why, i am a barber i have been self employed for over 2 years, on january 31st 2018  i became employed to receive payslips in oder to get a mortgage then in september 2019 i went back on self employed, i have an accountant who pays my tax for me on behalf of the company, i was just frustrated that i was deemed ineligible but people who i work with are eligible to receive help from the scheme, i have called for my application to be reviewed but this won't happen until the 28th may and am worried that it won't state the reason why my application was rejected, any help would be appreciated.

    thank you all so much

Without knowing your self employed profits and how these compare with your earnings from employment and any other sources of income it’s impossible to say, Your SE profits need to be equal to or more than the total of your other income. it may be that you’re period of employment means that this is not true for the 18-19 tax year nor averaged out over the two years.

then in september 2019 i went back on self employed, i have an accountant who pays my tax for me on behalf of the company

That makes it sound like you aren't self employed but are a director of a limited company.

    Which is it?

Although what happened in the 2019:20 tax year is largely irrelevant for the SEISS scheme.

    The eligibility criteria are:

    "Who can claim

You can claim if you’re a self-employed individual or a member of a partnership and:

    • you traded in the tax year 2018 to 2019 and submitted your Self Assessment tax return on or before 23 April 2020 for that year
    • you traded in the tax year 2019 to 2020
    • you intend to continue to trade in the tax year 2020 to 2021
    • you carry on a trade which has been adversely affected by coronavirus"
You say you were not self employed from some time in January 2018 to some time in September 2019. Therefore you were not self employed in 2018/19. You fail the test in the first bullet point in bold above. However that does not quite tie in with your comment that you have been self employed for over 2 years? Are your dates wrong, or are you adding two periods together?

The facts are apparently inconsistent though, so I forgive you!!
