Advice needed - buying a car with plates changed

Saw my dream vehicle on a popular auction site. I went as far was to buy a rac vehicular check which highlighted3 changes of plates over 17 years and 2 owners

So it started life as gxxxxx (2003). Then became axxxxx (2004). Then it changed to lxxxxx (2007) and then went BACk to gxxxxx (2016). It has had two owners . Is this strange - that it went back to original plate?

The other thing that makes me concerned is that the mot history (which is immaculate) shows a full history all the way back to 2006 after I typed in the gxxxxxx plate. I would assume that I would not be able to see the history beyond 2016 when the plate was lxxxxx or axxxxx.

I have no idea about how plate changes are logged on the mot - so would appreciate some advice.

When you fit vanity plates, and take them off again (rather than swap for another vanity plate), the vehicle gets it's original plate back.
The MOT history follows the identity of the car, which at the moment is tied to the original plate.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Sounds like it had three owners (2 on V5c + 1 the guy you bought it from)  nothing strange about it they just chopped and changed private plates and have ended back with the original plate it was first registered with.

Thanks for your comments. There is one other thing that I would like to ask. The rac report states two things to be aware of
    1. PLATE CHANGES
    2. THE MILEAGE HISTORY FOR THIS VEHICLE IS UNAVAILABLE
I was wondering if the Milage history is unknown because of the plate changes?

Possibly. Their "mileage histories" tie together from a bunch of sources. The MOT history and keeper changes will be tied correctly to the plate changes. Other sources won't be.

What are the axxxx and lxxxx plates? Are they the kind of plate that might be a vanity plate?
  • Is mileage consistent based on MOT history? I wouldn't worry about 2 or 3 plate changes over 17 years. It's nothing.
