Roofline help please

Hello all,
Our home's roofline is in need of a bit of work. The fascia and soffits are wooden. We have had a quote of over 2k to replace the house with UPVC ones or 1k to paint and clear them. We want to get it sorted before the house gets potential water damage. Can anybody please advise on which option is better: paint or replace? TIA

Timber fascias and soffits will always require more maintenance than uPVC. It will therefore be more cost effective and cost you less money in the long term if you were to replace with uPVC.0

Paint and clear is a temporary solution. A proper UPVC replacement should be a permanent one, and I have also found that since we had our cast iron replaced with UPVC I have never had to manually clear the gutters. All the crud runs along the gutter and down the downpipe in heavy rain.

Make sure the work is to replace, not cover the wooden ones.0

My concern is that is the boards are rotting, will the rot spread to whatever they are secured to. That would be the roof joists? To get it sorted, would be old ones just be removed and plastic put in its place?

A job that was supposed to be a simple replacement of some old wooden boards with new PVC ones ended up with joists being repaired where they were rotting away at the ends. That's also why you don't cover up old rotting boards with a flimsy skin of PVC.I ended up having the whole roof stripped and re-laid. But that was because of other problems discovered when the builder turned up to repair the joists. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
When we got our roof done we opted for wooden boards rather than uPVC as it's an older property and we didn't like the look of the uPVC.
We are aware that they will take more maintenance and upkeep.0
