my colleague is working while I,m furloughed.

Hi. I work in a garage in a office with another guy. so one of us currently has to be furloughed which my boss decided would be my colleague.fair enough. my boss seems to think that I've now done my furlough and that's it. so I'm back to work full time. but surely if this continues into june its only fair that I'm furloughed once more and my colleague returns to work for a month. just wondering what your take on that would be.

Well yes it would be fair. But it would be more admin and costs to the company and perfectly legal if they do not. So what is fair really does not come into it.

It doesn't really matter what we think. What is your bosses perspective on it?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I would think by end of June garages would be open normally, another 6 weeks yet. There already going to be a massive backlog of work.

Take confidence from the fact that you are considered the most appropriate person to keep employed. If times get hard. You'll be the one more likely to still have a job.
Furlough isn't a paid holiday. It's protecting jobs that otherwise might very quickly disappear.

yes I was kinda thinking that way myself when I was mulling it over in bed last night.
  • Me & my pregnant colleague (well manager) from our 2-person office have not so much as had a break. Furlough should never have been allowed to be considered a right.
I know people back in workplace who had first 3/4 weeks on furlough as I was starting wfh so to them it must feel unfair that one is still home working.
Luckily this week, just in the nick of time I managed to re-educate myself alone in getting re-acquainted with setting up direct debit plans so avoided getting the chop, not sure if I've passed the 3 month probation but still.
Be grateful you have a job and 1000 times better if you can do that job un-aided and without the need of a colleague.

What happens when the furlough subsidy ends or is reduced to say 50%. Will you be saying it's your turn to go on furlough and just receive 50% wage, or will you prefer to work then. What happens if once the funding is withdrawn and your boss feels he can't keep you both on, I'm sure you'll remind him which of you were working and who was furloughed the longest.

People are treating furlough as a government paid holiday, when whilst the idea is to preserve the jobs, there is no guarantee that it will and we may see some redundancies if recovery isn't quick and and companies have to go through rationalisation once the funding ends.
