17 Year old Furlough

Hi my son has received an email that he will be furloughed from his employer. He is currently on a zero hours contract but they have said they will average his hours to 10 per week. He is the only one in his team to be furloughed on 10 hours and not his average over 12 months the rest have been given average over 12 months. The reason given for this was that in March he asked for reduced hours temporary to concentrate on his A Levels however he was never given a shift after that email. His average hours over 12 months would amount to more than 10 hours per week and he has been singled out from the rest of his team. Is this correct? Many thanks in advance.

If he is on a zero hours contract, he is a variable pay employee, and his reference salary for calculating CJRS should be the higher of his average wages in 2019/20 up to furlough, or his wage in the equivalent period a year earlier.1

Thank you for your reply. This is what I thought as per furlough guidelines. Just wanted to check before we ask the question why the furlough rules have been different for him compared to his colleagues. Much appreciated.1
