The question is whether your husband's "discretionary bonus" really is discretionary for the purpose of calculating CJRS. In normal times could his employer pay him no bonus if they just felt like doing that?
  • Yes basically if they wanted to they could choose to not pay a penny of it and just pay his salary, his salary is 1/3 of his annual pay he has earned for the last 3 tax years

Unfortunately then he is not going to get more from his employer, if they have reduced his pay to what they can claim. If you don't get tax credits, see if you are entitled to claim universal credit (use an eligibility checker. (If you claim tax credits, starting a claim for universal credit will stop the tax credits.) Take a mortgage break if you pay a mortgage.

.. or ask the company for a top-up. Don't ask etc.

The mood is changing slightly where people who were seen as a cost, are now being seen as key to any bounce back. Good staff are hard to find and the balance will change when everything starts back up again.

No harm in pointing it out in a reasonable way.
