I saw a kettle and matching toaster in The Range. They were matching but had to be bought separately. The kettle was always sold out so ended up ordering online with small charge and picked up in store.
3 months on, turned kettle on last night, made a quiet sizzling noise but boiled on. Later when entering kitchen could smell a faint melted plastic aroma. Later, turned kettle on, wouldn't work. Went to take plug out of socket. Completely stuck. Eventually pulled out and one of the pins had overheated and melted slightly. Went to return today, staff were quite shocked at the plug but yes could refund kettle but not toaster. I said but not only did I buy this because it was a matching set, they are both made by same company which I feel the toaster is unsafe too. Manager said because we don't sell these if you bought online it's a different company you need to take it up with them. I explained that they had sold exact same ones. She was surprised and went to look for the stock. After a wait she came back but said same thing.
Sooooo
I now have a toaster that I don't want to plug in and no kettle.
Can anyone advise anything I should mention in my email. I'm not very hopeful about a refund.
Thankyou

The manager is right, you would need to return the toaster "online" as that's how you bought it. After three months you're not going to get a refund for a toaster that is used and isn't faulty.
I really wouldn't worry about the toaster. The chances of it being faulty because the kettle is made by the same company are slim to none. Most electrical faults are not dangerous because of fuses, earth and RCDs. I'd just carry on using the toaster. If you're really worried, the other options are to ask an electrician to PAT-test the toaster or just give it away and buy a new one.2 -
Just want to add that no one should ever leave a toaster plugged in. And by that I don't mean unplug it. But turn off the socket after use (and if your socket does not do that get it changed! (I mean I had some unswitched in my old house but for reasons! sockets were inaccsesable and I then had a switch anyway somewhere that was)). Some people never clean them out and they really can be a fire hazard even if they are.
Same for most things that cause heat. So yes a kettle too. Always better to be safe.

If one of the spring sockets is worn or loose, you can get sparking between that socket and the pin of the plug and this can cause a significant heating to occur very quickly.
Even if this wasn't the cause, enough heat to melt the plug could easily have damaged the inside of the wall socket and I would highly recommend that you stop using this socket until such time as it can be looked at or replaced by a suitably knowledgeable person/4 -
^^ yes, that's good advice.0
