International Movers - storage charges

Hi,

I am hoping to find some help with a situation I now find myself in. We moved from South Africa to the UK at the end of last year. We contracted a moving company to ship our household goods from SA to the UK and as you can imagine there have been delays with this due to the current situation. The ship arrived in the UK and the goods were unloaded at the UK depot at the beginning of April at which point we got an email from them saying that they cannot safely deliver our goods due to the COVID-19 situation and due to this they are going to charge us £50 a week to store out items until they are able to deliver again.

I completely understand the delays and I am happy to wait until it is safe for everyone so that the local movers are able to deliver our goods, however I do not believe that it is my responsibility to pay for the storage for an undetermined amount of time!
Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated!

Do you have legal cover on your home insurance? If so, ask them for advice.

What does your contract with the removal company say? It will probably have something about who pays for storage in the case of delays. If the cost falls on you then you still have a case to make that delivery can be done safely and they are wasting your money by delaying.
