Resigned job and universal credit

My husband resigned from his teaching job as it had become increasingly stressful and his mental health was suffering. His notice was handed in in February and he finished his notice period in April. His intention was to go on to do supply teaching for a while. He tried to retract his notice but it wasn’t allowed. He asked if he could be furloughed but they declined. Can he now claim for job seekers (he is seeking other jobs) and universal credit even though he left his job voluntarily? We have a huge mortgage, two children and I only earn £600 a month.

Universal Credit can be claimed providing you don't have savings/capital of more than £16,000. A claim for UC would end any tax credits you may already be claiming. He could claim New style JSA if he's paid enough NI contributions in tax years April 2017 to March 2019 but the JSA would be deducted £1 for £1 from the UC.Use a benefits calculator to check entitlement to UC. You won't receive any help with your mortgage. https://www.entitledto.co.uk/

If you are eligible for UC (once you've checked on the benefits calculator) apply for it the day after your husband receives his final pay from his employer. If you make the application before, then any income he receives that month will be counted as income and possibly reduce your UC entitlement to 0.1

Will there be any sanction because he resigned from his job?0

Not if there was good reason which it sounds as if there possibly was. In any case the appropriate sanction, if applied, would be 13 weeks from the action which I think would have been the handing in of notice and that period is coming to an end anyway.sheramber said:Will there be any sanction because he resigned from his job?Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.1
